Ford Ranger Gets A Power Kick With Texas Walker Conversion
Possibly the most important and first part of the conversion is the fitment of a Unichip performance chip and plug and play system from the team at Dastek Power. The chip has been tested comprehensively on the two Ford TDCi engines and are optimised for South African driving conditions.
With the Unichip and plug and play system on board Ford Ranger owners can expect up to 20% more power and 25% more torque for the 2.2 TDCi engine and up to 20% more power and torque on the already impressive performance figures of the 3.2 TDCi Ranger.
The next stage of the Texas Walker conversion adds extra cooling through the fitment of a custom made Power Cooler to the 3.2 Ranger. This intercooler allows virtually double the amount of cold air into the engine, which allows the engine to breathe and perform even better. With this Power Cooler fitted, the team at SAC can also add a Power Switch. Together these two additions will give you complete control of your engine’s character from inside the cabin.

By fitting a Unichip Plug and Play system we are able to tap into that power and, with the help of a Power Switch, the owner can dial into the power or choose a map that favours power, more technical or more frugal driving.”
The second stage of tune on the Ranger Texas Walker Unichip system with Power Switch offers five different driving maps. In its first setting, the Ranger enters a security mode, which renders the engine powerless and the vehicle unable to drive.
Notch the Power Switch up to the second setting and you will reconnect with your standard vehicle, as this setting mirrors the exact engine settings of the standard 2.2 or 3.2 engine. The third setting was created in response to many SAC customers’ need for better fuel consumption in city driving circumstances. In this setting the Ranger will deliver power gradually, with the benefit of better fuel consumption and greater travelling distances between fill-ups immediately evident.
The Texas Walker Unichip conversion adds two more unique engine settings that should be favourites among Ranger owners. The first of these two additional settings is an off road and towing option that changes the engine’s power band to deliver its peak power at lower engine speeds. For lovers of technical off road driving or people who regularly tow a large boat or caravan, this setting is ideal.
The primary function of an upgraded intercooler is to improve on the cooling efficiency over the standard cooler. This means that the entry air temperature needs to be dropped as far as possible (more than the standard cooler) at the exit of the cooler without compromising or interfering with the flow and or charge pressure- the boost. Our upgraded intercooler has been through very strict Research and Development procedures and has been properly tested to meet the requirements of today’s technologically advanced and challenged Diesel Turbo vehicles. The new cooler mounts in the same location as the standard one and in most cases, utilizes the original pipes and clamps. (With the exception of the D4D Hilux that goes from top mount to front mount) The intercooler upgrade is an integral part of the performance enhancement process that optimizes the volumetric efficiency of a TDi Bakkie. In short, the way that the cooler works is to cool down the air as much as possible – that is being produced by the turbo charger (that heats up when compressed). Fast-hard riding as well as towing causes thermal engine temperature creep which eventually spirals out of control and deteriorates your vehicles engine condition and shortens its life. The last setting available through the Power Switch is the jewel in the SAC Conversion’s crown. Opt for this engine map and suddenly all of the hidden power in the TDCi engine comes rolling in like the dark clouds before a Highveld thunderstorm.
“Both the 2.2 and 3.2 engines have a large reserve of extra power that we have been able to safely and reliably unleash with our performance chip,” says Fischer.
