 | | | PRESS RELEASES | Volkswagen Golf 4 / Polo 1,9 TDi Tests independently conducted by Adrian Burford of Roadworks cc | | - SAC PLAYS POLO (AND GOLF) - | | Steves Auto Clinic’s arsenal of aftermarket products has been expanded recently with a pair of hatchbacks designed to meet the needs of dissimilar segments of the market. | | Conversions to the Golf 4 TDi and giant-killing Polo 1.9 TDi Sportline respectively give an old-faithful a higher level of overall efficiency and turn a car which is fast-becoming the thinking man’s hot hatch into a vehicle of unsurpassed all-round ability. | | The three-door Polo will accelerate to 100 km/h in just 8,2 seconds, and reach a true 218 km/h with both numbers verified in independent testing at Reef altitude. In similar conditions, the Golf is capable of the 0 – 100 km/h sprint in just over nine seconds and a top speed of 198 km/h. | | | | | “With the price of fuel unlikely to drop anytime soon, we were looking to engineer packages which would not only benefit outright performance but also bring gains in fuel efficiency,” explains Steve Fischer of SAC Holdings, the franchiser of the nationally-represented tuning, repair, and servicing group. “Modern motoring consumers don’t want to sacrifice driveability and fuel efficiency on the altar of improved performance and those considerations have been foremost in mind when engineering these conversions.” | | Fortunately the basic Volkswagen mechanical package lends itself very well to this kind of update. While similar, the two powerplants have different injection systems, but the same basic route is used to extract more from them. Therefore, similar results will be achieved with the 1,9-litre turbodiesel fitted to many VW, Audi, and now SEAT models. | | The conversions to the Golf and Polo both consist of five elements: | | | | | | In the case of the Polo the end result is a meaty 125 kW, torque improving by some 18 percent to around 365 Nm. These numbers place it firmly in the upper echelon of the hot hatch class. In the case of the Golf, power swells from 81 to 108 kW, an increase of 33 percent. As the attached performance results show, effortless overtaking acceleration is a characteristic of both SAC cars. | | But none of this comes at the expense of mechanical integrity. SAC prides itself on working from a platform of accepted research and development principals, and thanks to an in-house engineering department, is able to properly measure and evaluate critical parameters during the R&D process. | | The results are quantified not only by measuring the increases on a dynamometer, but also with scientifically gathered road test results, usually benchmarked against a standard example of the same car. | | “South Africans are truly embracing the benefits of modern, small turbodiesels and these engines have a lot to offer in terms of combining driver-friendly torque with fuel efficiency,” adds Fischer. “In standard form they tend to be conservatively tuned, so they also lend themselves to aftermarket improvements. Nevertheless, this kind of work needs to be done by experts if the results are going to be enjoyed over the long-term. We believe our Volkswagen turbodiesel conversions more than meet that objective.” | | The total cost of the conversion is R17 995, though the individual elements can be purchased separately.
