Isuzu KB 280 DT. 

Met ons vorige 4x4-uitkloptoets was die Isuzu die nuutste model in die evaluasie, maar met al die vervaardigers wat intussen nuwe modelle bekend gestel is, was die KB280 DT nou die oudste bakkie.
Nietemin het hy nog heelwat kenmerke wat sterk in sy guns tel, en hy is beslis 'n waardige mededinger.
Selfs al is die KB-reeks redelik oud, is sy stillering nog heel vars, en met kolligte, 'n bosbreker en rolstaaf, buffer/trekstangkombinasie en alloiwiele, hoef dit nie vir enige van sy mededingers terug te staan nie.
Tog meen ons dit sou nog meer aggressiewer vertoon het as dit effens wyer was, en meer gronvryhoogte had.
Die Isuzu se binneruim is gerieflik, en het besondere lae geraasvlakke.
Sy standaardtoerusting is redelik omvattend, maar 'n koppiehouer of twee sou gewis welkom wees!
Daar is egter wel kaartleesliggies, 'n pluspunt bo meeste van die ander bakkies.
'n Ratslot en 'n immobiliseerder is albei standaard, asook sentrale sluiting met afstandbeheer.

Dit hel voldoende been- en kop-ruimte voor, maar agter is dinge maar bra knap.
Ook die in- en uitklimslag word agter effens deur kleinerige deure bemoeilik en die voorsitplekke wat ver terug geplaas is.
Ander standaardeienskappe sluit in elektriesbeheerde ruite, 'n rommelkissie in die middelkonsole en 'n radio sonder bandspeler, maar met CD-aanpasbaarheid.
Die Isuzu se beproefde turbodieselenjin van 2,8 liter lewer 'n heel aanvaarbare 74 kW teen 3 600 r/min en 230 Nm teen 2 200 r/min en met 'n versneltyd van 17,9 s tot 100 km/h, verbysteektye van onderskeidelik 12,6 s (60 - 100 km/h) en 16,2 s (80-120 km/h) en 'n topspoed van 144 km/h, kan die Isuzukragbron steeds vir die nuwelinge se enjins kers vashou.
En selfs met minder wringkrag en krag as die Ford en Colt, het die Isuzu geen probleem gehad om die bulte op die oop pad kaf te draf nie, en sy ritgerief op teer was die beste van die lot - dit voel meer soos 'n sedanmotor as 'n bakkie!
Sy stopkrag was aanvaarbaar, maar nie op die vlak van die Ranger en Colt nie, want dit het gemiddeld 3,7 s geneem om van 100 km/h te rem.
Ook in die veld is die KB meer as opgewasse, en sy ewenaarslot is maklik om te gebruik.
Die Isuzu, saam met die Toyota, is die enigste bakkies met wateruitlate in hul lugsuiweraars, wat die kans verminder dat water in die enjin kan kom.
Duidelik het ondervinding en kennis van plaaslike toestande 'n rol in dié ontwerp gespeel.
Dit dui ook daarop dat dié twee vervaardigers heelwat moeite gedoen het om hul voertuie by Suid-Afrikaanse toestande aan te pas.
Die voertuig het geen kanttrappe nie, maar 'n rubberstrook langs die deure beskerm die bakwerk.
Die agterste buffer en trekstang vertoon goed, maar dit beperk sy vertrekhoek erg.
En met 'n prys van R 177 783 is die die duurste van die vyf, maar hy was ook die suinigste, met 'n verbruiksyfer van 9,19 liter/100 km.
