Steves Auto Clinic have been at the forefront of state of the art vehicle enhancement in South Africa for the past 25 years now and when it comes to making big capacity leisure vehicles go even better, they have the perfect, tailored to your specific needs, full house power upgrade for your vehicle.
And by big guns they are talking about the ever popular Nissan Navara, Toyota Hilux and Fortuner, Ford Ranger and Jeep Wrangler range of 4.0 litre naturally aspirated offerings. You can even throw in the equally potent and just as popular Isuzu KB 350 into this mix of big guns if you want.
You bought them because you wanted to own the most powerful bakkie or leisure vehicle on our roads today and you have pretty much achieved this, but is it enough to rule the road they ask? Turbodiesels are getting more and more powerful by the day, and let’s not forget that the competition in this petrol driven segment of the market itself is growing all the time, manufacturers are constantly attempting to outdo each other in this power war.
Now engine conversions have come a long way from the days when a tuner would take a crude grinding tool to the cylinder head and gouge out the ports as big as possible, bolt on a high-lift camshaft and a massive, noisy exhaust in the quest for power. SAC’s power upgrade is the result of many hours of research and development, using sophisticated test equipment to monitor not only power output, but also, and most importantly, real-life driveability of the vehicle.
And as such all SAC conversions offer the best possible combination of torque and power throughout the rev range, in order to provide a uniform power gain which is usable under everyday driving conditions. Smooth idling, acceptable and even better in most cases fuel consumption, efficient cold starting and normal operating temperatures, just as you would expect, remain unaffected by going the tried and tested SAC route.
To understand what must be done to your naturally aspirated engine in order to reliably extract the horsepower required to make your vehicle perform the way you would expect it to after the tuners at SAC have worked their magic, you need understand how important and what happens to your vehicle’s cylinder heads in this process.
The cylinder head is in fact the most important area to consider by the serious tuner when looking for power. Sure, the full house package does include the fitment of a performance exhaust branch, free flow exhaust, performance air filter, air box mod, speed limiter removal, and precise engine mapping via a Uni Q chip to bring this all together in a heady mix of unrivalled power and torque.
But there is no way in which real horsepower can be obtained if the head won't flow efficiently and in turn burn its air / fuel mixture efficiently. Many tuners go to extremes, cramming as much air into the cylinder as possible, only to have a combustion chamber that won’t burn the mixture efficiently.
So SAC sets about perfectly optimising this ratio via state of the art gas flowing techniques, while fitting bigger, and again, correctly matched valves to the cylinder head. The bottom line is that the bigger the explosion in the combustion chamber, the more the downward force is created and the result is simply "More Power"...
