The Engine Management System (EMS) on modern diesel vehicles consists of various sensors, an Electronic Control Unit / ECU and various actuators. The sensors gather information on engine speed (crank Angle Sensor), Accelerator position (Throttle Position Sensor), Engine air consumption (Air Flow Meter) and many other parameters.

This information is sent to the Electronic Control Unit / ECU. The ECU compares this information to the data stored in its memory (the MAP). This MAP tells the ECU exactly what signal to send to the actuators based on these sensor signals at that particular instant.

The actuators respond to the ECU command signals. This may be the fuel injector opening and allowing the correct amount of fuel into the engine or the electronic diesel pump controlling the point of injector opening.

Some other companies may claim to use a dynamometer to live tune their development pre-programmed diesel plugs.

However, whether it be a diesel box, replacement chip or the reprogramming of the original chip through the vehicles diagnostic port, their process is a rather hit and miss affair of making a slight change to the manufacturers MAP, then use the dynamometer to check the results, make another change and so forth.

Obviously to safely enhance every point would require many hundreds of attempts.

By strictly monitoring the exhaust gas and coolant temperatures during the development stage the POWERPLUG is able to safely enhance the diesel engine’s performance and economy.
