The flow, mass and working resistance all need to be consistent on all the cylinders and then if you keep in mind that the air flows through a port and over a valve on high rpm at roughly 800 km/h then we should understand the importance of the aerodynamic finish inside the port and on the valves.

The mass of the valve for instance multiplies as the rpm goes up and only a few grams off a valve results in far less energy being used to move it up and down.

A four stroke engine would open and close its valves 2,000 times for every 4,000 revs and how will that effect the power when there are 16 valves that open and close?

It is of utmost importance to lighten the valves when in search of extra power. 

A 6 cylinder 24 valve or a V8 with 4 valves per cylinder are effected more by this philosophy.
